Handmade Moments: Creating Greeting Cards with My Kids
Some of my favorite memories with my kids are made around the craft table, surrounded by scraps of paper, colored pencils, and a wild assortment of recycled materials. Together, we create greeting cards for every occasion—birthdays, thank you notes, Valentine’s Day, and the holiday season.
Our creative process is a joyful mess of crafts and color. We have a dedicated storage bin for all our art supplies—glue sticks, glitter, markers, stickers, and a rainbow of construction paper. The kids love rummaging through the box, picking out shades or sparkles to match the mood of the card. We often use bits of old magazines, ribbons, and packaging, giving new life to things that might otherwise be thrown away.
Experimenting with color palettes and textures, we talk about how different colors can express different feelings—bright yellows for cheer, soft blues for calm, and bold reds for excitement. Each card becomes a tiny canvas for their imagination, and I love seeing their personalities shine through in every creation.
But beyond the crafts, it’s the time spent together that matters most—laughing, brainstorming, and sometimes getting a little messy. At the end of each session, we make it a point to clean up together. This way, the kids learn about organization and responsibility. Sorting markers, capping glue sticks, and putting everything back in its place is just as much a part of the ritual as the crafting itself.
Each card is a small celebration of our family’s creativity and a reminder that the most meaningful gifts are often the ones made by hand, with love—and a little bit of glitter.
