A Mother’s Day of Muffins, Mughals, and Memories

There is something uniquely special about sharing Mother’s Day across multiple generations. This year, we decided to celebrate our special day with a beautiful blend of homemade treats, world history, and deep family bonding. The lovely morning began right in the heart of our home—the kitchen. Surrounded by the sweet, comforting aroma of vanilla, blueberries, and baking sugar, we started the day with some collaborative muffin making. Pouring batter and sharing laughs, it was the absolute perfect, cozy start before venturing out.

With our appetites completely satisfied, three generations of our family—my wonderful grandmother, my mother, and myself—headed straight to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). Our main destination was the highly anticipated Great Mughal exhibition, and it truly exceeded all of our expectations.

Stepping into the hushed galleries, we were immediately transported to an opulent era. The magnificent exhibit primarily focused on the fascinating reigns of three legendary emperors: Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan. As we wandered through the carefully curated rooms together, we uncovered several surprising finds that sparked wonderful conversations between the three of us. We were genuinely amazed to see the distinct influence of European style art seamlessly woven into the traditional pieces. The intricate craftsmanship of deadly punch daggers contrasted sharply with the vibrant, beautiful depictions of exotic animals and the breathtaking display of impossibly large jewels. Even the complex architectural designs on display showcased a staggering level of artistic detail and ambition that left all three of us entirely captivated.

Before leaving the VMFA, we simply had to stop by the museum bookstore. We picked up a few gorgeous books on Mughal art and the historic emperors to keep the inspiration alive at home. While browsing the diverse shelves, a fascinating novel titled Optic Nerve completely caught my eye, and I happily bought it as a treat for myself.

Following the museum, we headed out to a nearby cafe for a delicious lunch, happily laughing and dissecting our favorite exhibits over great food and warm drinks. As we finally walked out into the warm afternoon air, I realized how perfect the entire outing had been. Between the dazzling historical artifacts and the fresh literary purchases, we had certainly secured treasure finds of our own today. But the greatest treasure by far was simply the beautiful, uninterrupted time spent with family.
